Brussels is giving taxis an extra two years to gradually switch to electric

According to HLN, Brussels is sticking to the 2027 deadline for new taxis, but existing cars will be given longer.

According to HLN, the Brussels government is sticking to the deadline of January 1, 2027, by which no new taxis with a combustion engine may be registered. The obligation to register only emission-free new taxis as new vehicles from January 1, 2027 will be retained. There will be more time for existing vehicles: the maximum useful life of existing fossil fuel vehicles will be extended from seven to nine years. The increase in the age limit will give taxi operators an extra two years to make the switch. to prepare and invest in electric driving, and for electric vehicles, hydrogen vehicles and taxis for people with reduced mobility, the limit will increase from eight to ten years.

In the Netherlands, there is no comparable mandatory end date for taxi transport for vehicles with combustion engines. Municipalities and regions can set their own requirements for permitted taxi vehicles, for example via zero-emission zones. The Brussels discussion shows that the transition to electric driving in the taxi sector is also gradual elsewhere in Europe.
