European taxi organizations are demanding that robotaxis be subject to the same local rules as regular taxis.
Representatives of taxi companies from eleven European countries called for local supervision of self-driving taxis during a meeting of the European Radio Taxi Association (ERTA) in Paris, pitane.blue reports. According to the industry, autonomous vehicles used as taxis should be subject to the same rules as driver-driven vehicles and supervised by the competent local authorities. The Netherlands was not represented at this meeting.
Taxi transport in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe has traditionally been locally organized and regulated, while the development of self-driving vehicles takes place across national borders. This raises the question of how municipalities and provinces can monitor technology that is developed and tested elsewhere, including in cities in the Rijnmond region where taxi transport is a sector requiring a permit.
For the time being, nothing will change for VindTaxi customers: you will simply be transported by a driver in the Nissan Ariya or by an affiliated taxi company from the Taxi EU Service NL Platform. Self-driving taxis are not yet operational in the Netherlands, and this discussion is mainly about the rules that should one day be introduced.
